About Penny Zuber

Penny Zuber began her coaching career at Liberty Union High School, starting the Girls Track & Field program in 1973 before retiring from coaching in 1989 to spend more time with her family. In 1973 & 1974, she coached the GAA (Girls Athletic Association) Track & Field program at Liberty Union before the Ohio High School Athletic Association recognized Girls Track & Field starting with the 1975 season. During her 17-year tenure, the Lions Girls Track & Field program of Liberty Union High School captured 3 Mid-State League Championships, 2 OHSAA Central District Championships, 1 OHSAA Regional Championship, a 4th Place OHSAA Division 3 (Class A) State Championship team finish (1987), an OHSAA Division 2 (Class AA) State Runner Up team finish (1989) and an OHSAA Division 3 (Class A) State Championship team finish (1988). Under her mentorship, Liberty Union High School athletes competed in the state meet for 14 of the 15 years and competed in 15 different state meet events. Individually, her athletes qualified for the state championships in 32 individual events and 11 relays, earning All-Ohio honors 26 times. Penny coached two individual State Champions – Deanna Springer in the 100 Meter Dash (1987) and Renee Peck in the 3200 Meter Run (1987). During her tenure, in addition to 2 State Champions, her program produced 9 Individual State Runner-Up placers, 49 athletes captured individual Mid-State titles, 8 Mid-State Athlete of the Year honors, and 8 of the school records established at Liberty Union during her 17-year career still stand today. In 1985, through the leadership of Penny and her husband Greg, Liberty Union installed their first all-weather track, which served the school district until 2022. Since 2000, Penny has continued to give back to the youth of Ohio as a track and cross country official working local, district, regional, and state meets with nine state meet assignments. Penny was selected as the Mid- State Track & Field Coach of the Year three times, selected as the 1989 Fred Dafler State “Coach of the Year” for Girl’s Track & Field, received the 2015 OATCCC Distinguished Service Award, inducted into the Mid-State League and the Liberty Union High School Hall of Fame and in 2024 Penny was recognized as the Ohio Capital Conference Track Official of the Year. The accomplishments and immeasurable contributions made by Penny to Ohio Track & Field during her career are to be commended. All her recognitions and honors are well deserved. In recognition of the positive impact of Penny Zuber on the sport of Track & Field, the OATCCC is honored to recognize her as a 2025 OATCCC Hall of Fame Inductee. Congratulations Penny!
