With nearly 100 seasons of coaching in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track the last half of those at Buchtel High School John Scott has made the Griffins synonymous with winning. During his time at Akron Buchtel, the Griffins have won the Akron City Series Championship 55 times 28 times with the boys and 27 times with the girls. The boys teams have won eleven District Championships, nine Regional Championships, two Indoor State Championships, and two Outdoor State Championships. The girls have also won eleven District Championships, four Re- gional Championships, two Indoor State Championship titles, and one Outdoor State Championship. That is an astounding 42 championship titles across the levels of OHSAA state competition. Individually or on relays, too many athletes have qualified to the State Championships to count but once there, 263 of them made it to the podium and earned All-Ohio honors. An amazing 73 of those won individual State Championship honors including 100HH/300IH specialist Tiffany Tucker and 400M ace Curtis Eaton. Christy Campbell earned six All-Ohio honors in the sprints and relays as did Arthur Thomas who was an eight-time All-Ohio. Desiree Jones was also a multi- time All-Ohio athlete including State Championship titles in the hurdles and long jump. John’s individual recognition has come in the form of Summit County Coach of the Year (1996) and Plain Dealer Coach of the Year in 1996 and 2006. He was selected as the OATCCC District 4 Coach of the Year for the girls in 1995 and then for the boys in 1996. Boys and girls combined, he has also been selected as the Akron City Series Coach of the Year on ten different occasions. John is a past President of the Akron Area Track and Cross Country Coaches Association. In 2003, John was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame. John is a veteran of the US Army having served in Vietnam from 1969-1970.
