About Denny Hammond
Denny Hammond, during his 29-year head coaching tenure, developed a reputation of consistently being able to coach athletes to the highest levels of Track & Field and Cross Country. Season after season he was able to prove his ability to guide numerous athletes and teams to Conference, District, Regional and State Championships. His coaching career began at Canal Winchester High School in 1982 where he remained as the head Cross Country coach until 1985 before moving to Reynoldsburg High School to coach both Cross Country and Track & Field from 1994-2012 before finishing up his career as the head Cross Country Coach at Columbus Academy from 2015-2020. In Cross Country Denny coached his teams to 4 Ohio Capital Conference Championships, 9 OHSAA District Championships, 2 OHSAA Regional Championships and 4 OHSAA Regional Runner-Up finishes. He coached a total of 25 All-Ohio runners including one individual female state champion Lyndsi Gay (1998 – 17:37.2 – Reynoldsburg High School) and one male state champion – Tsehaye Hiluf (2011 – 15:21.52 – Reynoldsburg High School). In track & field at Reynoldsburg High School coach Hammond guided his teams to 15 OCC Championships, 14 OHSAA District Championships, 10 OHSAA Regional Championships, 4 OHSAA Girls Division 1 State Track & Field Championships in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The 2009 girls’ championship squad set a state record of 82 for points scored at the meet. His girls’ track & field program also finished 9th at the 2006 state championships and 4th in 2007. Denny also coached his boys’ team to a 2004 OHSAA Boys Division 1 State Track & Field Runner-Up finish and his girls’ team to a 2008 OHSAA Girls Division 1 State Track & Field Runner-Up finish. During his remarkable run Coach Hammond coached 129 All-Ohio athletes, including 23 individual or relay team champions. His athletes set state meet records in the 4x100 Meter Relay, 4x200 Meter Relay, 4x400 Meter Relay and the 3200 Meter Run, demonstrating the breadth and diversity of his coaching ability. In recognition of his commitment and accomplishments in the sport of cross country Denny Hammond was selected as the Team Ohio Boys Cross Country coach for the Mideast Meet of Champions in 2005 and 2006. He received the 2010 Fred Dafler Girls Career Coach of the Year Award from the Ohio Association of Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches and recognized as the 2011 NFHS Ohio Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Sports. The Ohio Association of Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches is proud to recognize and celebrate the remarkable athlete and team accomplishments as well as the multiple conference, district, state, and the national coach of the year honors Denny Hammond compiled during an amazing 37 year coaching career. It is with profound respect and enthusiasm for a job well done that the OATCCC is honored to recognize Denny Hammond as a 2026 Hall of Fame Inductee. Congratulations Denny!
